Viola

The viola sounds a fifth lower than the violin and so sits in the middle of the string sound — where the harmony is made. Viola players are wanted: orchestras are almost always short of them. Switching from the violin works well, and so does starting on the viola directly. Four teachers give viola lessons; in the string orchestra and the symphony orchestra it has a settled place.
