Support for gifted pupils

Support within lessons

Extended lessons, additional supplementary subjects and playing in our ensembles and in the symphony orchestra are matched to the abilities and needs of the pupils. Speak to the teacher concerned; they will be glad to advise you.

Competitions

Competitions encourage an intensive engagement with the instrument and reward the effort invested. We give our pupils comprehensive support in preparing for competitions such as “Jugend musiziert” – from the regional through the state to the national round. Where needed, we also provide piano accompaniment.

Preparation for music college

To give targeted support to pupils who are aiming at a music degree, the music school offers a preparatory course for music college studies (studienvorbereitende Ausbildung, SVA), which prepares them comprehensively for the entrance examinations at music colleges.
Following a recommendation from the teacher, the pupil takes an internal entrance examination. An entrance examination is not required if the applicant has won a first prize at least at state level in the Jugend musiziert competition within the past two years, or can demonstrate a comparable level of achievement.

Depending on the intended course of study (Bachelor’s degree or school music teaching), it is advisable to prepare for the entrance examination with extended or additional lessons in the main subject, piano as a second subject, singing and theory/aural training. The subjects are adapted to the individual pupil’s needs from a pool of available teaching minutes.

Participants in the SVA have obligations such as taking part regularly in pupils’ concerts, playing in one of the JMS ensembles, accompanying younger pupils where applicable, or acting as a tutor.

The SVA is limited to two years.

The registration form for the SVA is available from the school office or from the teacher.

Those aiming at a music degree are prepared specifically for the entrance examination and the start of studies — including music theory and aural training. Details on the Preparation for music college page.

Who can help

You can discuss whether support makes sense and which form suits best with the teacher concerned and the school management. Aims, the right time and the appropriate intensity are agreed individually.
