While still at school he was a guest student at what was then the conservatory in Nuremberg. After leaving school he studied music in Nuremberg and at the music college in Munich with trombone as his principal subject. He played stage music at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, took part in various early music ensembles and deputised with the Bach Orchestra Munich and the Innsbruck Symphony Orchestra among others. After his studies he became bass trombonist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bad Reichenhall, where in more than 600 concerts he came to know the full breadth of the orchestral repertoire.

From 1984 to 2021 he worked full-time as national trombone-choir officer for the Federation of Christian Trombone Choirs in Germany. His focus there was on training trombone choirs and ensembles, courses for young brass players and publishing music for trombone choirs. At the music school in St. Georgen he teaches the low brass: trombone, tenor horn and tuba. He also directs the Trachtenkapelle Buchenberg and a brass band in the Stuttgart area.

„The trombone is an athletic instrument. You are always moving, always on the slide.“
