When I started playing the trombone I had already been playing the guitar for quite a while. But I was looking for an instrument closer to the voice. I chose the trombone because its sound thrilled me — and indeed, since the fifteenth century the trombone has been said to be the wind instrument that comes closest to the sound of the human voice. It can play incredibly loudly, but also very, very quietly: first soft and gentle, then really letting rip. That great sound makes everything real fun, above all when playing in a section with other trombonists. That is the enthusiasm I want to pass on. It does not matter which style my pupils prefer — jazz, Latin, circus, renaissance, classical, small ensembles or large orchestras: the trombone is at home everywhere.
